Historical background
Forbes magazine Writer Mary Bellis said, "The automobile as we know it was not invented in a single day by a single inventor. The history of the automobile reflects an evolution that took place worldwide." According to the Library of Congress, Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot created the first vehicle - a military tractor - in 1769 for the French army. Robert Anderson created the first automobile and was electrically powered in 1832 and Karl Friedrich Benz made the first gas powered automobile in 1885. "In 1980, 87.2 percent of American households owned one or more motor vehicles, 51.5 percent owned more than one, and fully 95 percent of domestic car sales were for replacement. Americans have become truly auto-dependent" (The Reader’s Companion to American History).
In 1908 Henry Ford Introduces the model T which would change the economy greatly.
